Safety Evening – March 10th

We’re pleased to announce another GASCo Safety Evening, to be held on March 10th 2016 from 19:30 in Bobbington Village Hall. This will be coupled with a short presentation from Birmingham Airport on the subject of Airspace Incursions.

The last Safety Evening was well attended and well worth attending. I very much expect this will be a similarly thought provoking evening.

There is no charge for this event (even the tea, coffee and biscuits are free) and all are welcome, wherever you fly from and whatever your level of experience.

Bring your logbook to get a stamp in it!

Many thanks to Tony Dring for setting this up once again. For further information, please call Tony on 01384 221565 or e-mail him.

A new(ish) name, some familiar faces…

Changes afoot at Westbeach (as was). Westbeach Flight Academy ceased operating at the end of October; the owner has chosen to terminate his involvement in the Flight training Industry due to other commitments.

Westbeach is being replaced by the Central Flight School under different ownership. They expect to be operating shortly under a new CAA Approval. We wish Tim (for it is he) and the team all the best with their new venture.

Birmingham Airspace Presentation at Cosford

We have today received an invitation to Halfpenny Green based pilots to attend a presentation by Birmingham ATC at Cosford. Please see the details below:

I am the FSO for Cosford Powered Flying Club and I have arranged a presentation evening by Birmingham International ATC. They are coming to Cosford  on the 5th August 2015 and the presentation will start at 1800. I apologise for the short notice but initially it was only going to be for club members but with more interest I have sourced a larger venue, as such I am now extending the invite to all local flying agencies which most notably includes yourselves.

They are going to cover a few things including a brief overview of the way they work and points to note when flying near their airspace. They also want to dispel the myth that they are unapproachable on the frequency and primarily increase air safety in our area.

The presentation will be held at Cosford. Please extend this invite to all.

I would appreciate it if you may be able to give me a rough estimate on numbers should you have any interest. Whilst this may most notably benefit trainee pilots more it is also something that those with more experience may be interested in attending.

Details of where to go will be published here when we have them. If you’re planning to attend please e-mail Elaine so we can pass numbers to the organisers.

Update 30th July:

The location of the presentation will be at the Nuffield Pavilion which is next to the RAF Cosford Stadium. This is not “Behind the wire” and as such no formal ID will be required.

If you would like to be added to the distribution list for these e-mails please e-mail ATC. You can ask to be taken off the list again at any time.

Artist in Residence Appointed

We’re delighted to announce the appointment of Mr. Mo Awkati as ‘Artist in Residence’ for 2015. Mo will be seen all around the airport over the year ahead and we hope to see an exhibition of his work towards the end of the year. He will also be available  for private commissions so there’s an opportunity for a painting of your aircraft. You can see his website here.

Mo says:

I am an artist based in Kinver, South Staffordshire. I work and teach from my home based studio which is affectionately known as the Art Shed. I am a qualified teacher, Professional Member of the Society for All Artists (SAA) and an ex-PPL!

I like painting and drawing many subjects, but in particular aviation and seascape subjects. I work in acrylics, watercolours and coloured pencils, as well as graphite and charcoal mediums.

As the Artist in Residence at the airport I will be promoting the airport and general aviation through art. I will be working with the staff, flying schools, pilots, and businesses based at the airport to record with drawings and paintings life at the airport during a 12 month period. One of the aims is to encourage visitors, both visiting pilots and the general public, to come to the airport. By promoting the airport it is hoped that the community will use the airport, book flying lessons and become aware of the diverse number of businesses based at the airport.

I will be holding drawing days where pilots and others can have a quick sketch done of their aircraft for a small fee. Commissions for specific aviation paintings and drawings are accepted, please contact me to discuss details.

I am really looking forward to starting and hope to meet as many of you as possible.

A warm welcome to Mo – we hope you have a productive year!
